Gwon Osang, whose work suggests new possibilities for contemporary sculpture by crossing the boundaries between photography and sculpture and the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional, partakes in the eponymous GWON OSANG SCULPTURE CENTER 1/4 as part of a four-part exhibition series at PS ROY. Located in Dosan Park, PS ROY is a project space operated by ROY GALLERY with aims to expand meaningful interaction between artists and audiences and provide a platform for sculptural experimentation.

SCULPTURE CENTER 1/4  marks the beginning of a four-part series of exhibitions that will take place over the course of a year. These shows are opportunities to focus on the essence of sculpture by bringing together Gwon’s unique experimental and conceptual sculptural language through the spatial characteristics of a small window gallery.

The centerpiece of the exhibition is Torso (The Sculpture 14), a representative work from The Sculpture series. Having devoted over 1000 hours of physical time to the work, Gwon faithfully captures the elements of contemporary sculpture that he was so preoccupied with during the time of Torso’s creation (2008-2010).

Three works of the Relief series are overlapped flat images of differential layers that unfold the materiality of the image and contemporary spectacle in the space. In a separate window, the “deodorant-type” Fender (2022) is displayed—the guitar-shaped work a culmination of the artist's longstanding exploration of the fusion of photography and sculpture, experimentation with lightweight materials, and the exploration of boundaries between the two-dimensional and three-dimensional.

The exhibition is Gwon’s contemplated answer toward the question of sculptures, its constitution, and scope. Twisting the materiality of sculpture and inflating the flatness of photography, the artist's questions invite us to reconsider the appropriate weight and form attachable to the word “sculpture” in the contemporary context. Through encountering Gwon’s sculptures, viewers can perhaps experience a pleasant shift in sensation and thought.
