Biography
Gwon Osang (b. 1974, South Korea) is a seminal figure who has continuously expanded the horizon of contemporary sculpture by questioning its traditional methodologies and intersecting two fundamentally disparate mediums of photography and sculpture. By dismantling and reconstructing the conventional grammar of sculpture, he has developed a distinct, contemporary sculptural language.
Working primarily with isopink foam and printed photographic images, Gwon has developed a practice often described as “lightweight sculpture.” His Deodorant Type series, in which real subjects are first captured as flat photographic images and then reconstituted into three-dimensional forms, subverts the conventional attributes of sculptural volume and photographic flatness and articulates Gwon’s perspective on sculptural “weight.” Further, Gwon has persistently reinterpreted values of classical aesthetics upheld by previous generations of sculptors. His New Structure series, which transforms image-coated aluminum plates into three-dimensional structures inspired by Alexander Calder's concept of the Stabile, and Reclining Figure series, developed in reference to the sculptural forms of Henry Moore, stand as extensions of this inquiry. This process of reinterpretation of classical sculptural concepts embodies the artist's deep affection for sculpture and the accumulation of long-term contemplation.
In 2025, Gwon started his year-long, four-part exhibition series at PS ROY– the sculpturecentric, experimental project space of ROY Gallery. The SCULPTURE CENTER project aims to reexamine Gwon’s existing oeuvre whilst actualizing long conceived experimental ideas of the renowned artist.
Gwon earned both his BFA and MFA in sculpture from the Department of Sculpture at Hongik University's College of Fine Arts. Major domestic solo exhibitions include Arario Museum (2015, 2024), Lotte Avenue Art Hall (2023), Ilmin Museum of Art (2022), Suwon Museum of Art (2022), and Arario Gallery Seoul and Shanghai (2016).
