Gyul.E Kim

b. 1990, South Korea

Biography

Gyul E. Kim explores art through a process of deciphering signs and symbols that through a retrace of one’s steps, allows for self discovery. Kim reconfigures the boundaries of painting by first composing an image and then producing a canvas shaped to match it. This approach disrupts the traditional rectangular frame and flexibly expands possibilities of interpretation.

Drawing from geometric fragments observed in everyday life and the exaggerated visual language of classic animation, Kim develops a distinctive vocabulary of angular, nonconforming forms. This departs from conventional standards and generates a sense of visual dynamism and playfulness that is sourced in the artist’s engagement with marginalization and difference. Rather than resolve the dissonance of language and incomprehensibility, her work embraces ambiguity as points of fascination.

Kim graduated from Sungkyunkwan University with a BFA in Western Painting and completed her master’s degree in Art Therapy at Ewha Womans University. She has broadened her artistic processes through research at the Buk-gu Art Creation Center in Ulsan and the Gunpo Culture and Arts Creation Village Residency. She has held solo exhibitions at ROY Gallery (2024, 2025) and Artforlab (2023), and has actively participated in group exhibitions at the Hangaram Art Museum, Seoul Arts Center (2022), Sangwon Museum of Art (2019), and Kim Ria Gallery (2023). In 2023, she was named among ARTSY’s “Rising Artists of Asia & Its Diaspora” drawing attention from collectors both domestic and abroad. She is currently represented by ROY Gallery.
