Hyunmo Yang

b.1987, South Korea

Biography

For Hyunmo Yang (b. 1987, South Korea), painting is a sustained act of self-referential observation that allows for a process of equilibrium. Fragments of daily life and emotions oscillate between trembling lines and the abyss and attempts dialogue between painting and life. Examining sensation itself through the most elemental units of form—points, lines, planes, and shapes—Yang affirms instability as a fundamental condition of human existence. Yang traces these contemplations toward human presence and existence with his investigations manifesting through metaphors of the city, the sky, and the cosmos. Moving in a continuous cycle from sensory experience to inner exploration, Yang seeks to reveal aspects of life that resist language, asserting painting as the most direct means through which they can be perceived.

Yang received his BFA and MFA in Painting from Seoul National University. Since his first group exhibition in 2018, he has held solo exhibitions at ROY Gallery (2023, 2025) and Show and Tell (2019), and participated in group exhibitions at Yangpyeong Museum of Art (2024), Project Space Sarubia (2019, 2020), Noblesse Collection (2025), and Shinhan Gallery (2023), among others. He has expanded his market presence through Galleries Art Fair (2024) and Art Busan (2024,2025). In 2024, he was selected for New Abstract Art curated by Artsy, and in 2025 was named among 136 Abstract Artists Selected by 80 Art Professionals in Art in Culture (May issue).
