Jeonghyun Ha

b.1980, South Korea

Biography

Jeonghyun Ha (b. 1980, South Korea) approaches painting as a form of playful and pure experimentation without specific intent. In this process, childhood memories surface and accumulate in layered strata of sensation and emotion—encompassing not only visual recollections, but tactile and auditory impressions such as sunlight, wind, or the sound of fruit falling to the ground. The cascading memories intersect with the artist’s experiences of parenthood and transcends temporal linearity as the imprint on canvas. Using dense oil sticks, Ha materializes fragments of memory. Rubbing them onto the canvas with her hands, she solidifies scattered sensations of time and space into a single composition and transforms fleeting moments into living narratives. Drawing from fading memories, Ha’s paintings articulate a certain philosophical inquiry into permanence.

Ha holds a BFA in Ceramic Art and Visual Communication Design from Ewha Womans University, and earned her MFA and PhD at the same institution. She is currently an adjunct professor at Ewha Womans University. Ha has presented ten solo exhibitions, including at Gana Art Space (2005), Gallery Hesed (2022), and ROY Gallery (2024), and has participated in major group exhibitions at Seoul Museum of Art (2014), Saatchi Gallery, London (2023), Noblesse Collection (2024), and other leading institutions. Her works are held in the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s Government Art Bank and the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Museum Division.
