Biography
Jina Jung (b. 1990, South Korea) finds motifs in natural elements such as water, wind, and clouds. Combining images she has personally photographed with visual materials sourced online, Jung constructs unfamiliar yet seemingly recognizable landscapes. These composite images take shape as scenes that feel both visible and permeable within the digital realm before their translation into paintings.
While layering diverse images and forms of nature, Jung intentionally leaves gaps on cavas–creating open spaces for the viewer’s imagination and interpretation This open composition fosters an ongoing dialogue between the work and the viewer, as the artist sensitively calibrates rhythm through acts of marking and erasure. Rather than mimic nature, Jung refines her scenes with restraint and flexibility and responds to nature as an impression rather than a representation.
Jung studied Korean Painting at Ewha Womans University and earned both her bachelor's and master’s degree in this institution. She subsequently completed a second master’s degree at NYU Tisch’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP), where she expanded her practice through technology-based artistic experimentation. She has participated in international residencies in Germany and China, and has held seven solo exhibitions to date, including at ROY GALLERY (2022, 2025), Hidden M Gallery (2024), and Prompt Project (2023). Her work has been presented widely in group exhibitions at major institutions and platforms in Korea and abroad, including Moran Museum of Art (2012), Sejong Center for the Performing Arts (2016), Hangaram Art Museum (2021), Seoul Auction Gangnam Center (2021), Gallery Pakyoung (2021), and Shanghai’s 1-Art Gallery (2020).
