Gyomyung Shin (b. 1992) explores how technology shapes the relationships between humans, nature, and the living organisms within them, and how these influences affect human-nature interactions, revealing the shifting hierarchies between humans and nature/living beings. In contemplating these diverse objects, their living environments, their changing hierarchies, and interrelationships, as well as the direction for the future, Shin utilizes modern technologies such as robotics and polymers, alongside traditional materials like petroglyphs and hanji, in a diverse and integrated manner.

Shin majored in kinetic sculpture and mechanical engineering at Seoul National University and completed his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the same institution. His major solo exhibitions include the Hangaram Design Museum at the Seoul Arts Center (2022) and ROY Gallery (2023, 2024). He has also participated in group exhibitions at the Suwon Art Museum (2024), where he presented lectures and performances. He was selected as one of seven
"Outstanding Artists of 2024" as part of a grant for Artist Management Program—a Korea Arts Management Service initiated by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. He also notably partook in a group exhibition at the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art (2023).

Currently a represented by ROY Gallery, he is a resident artist at the Youngeun Museum of Art. Shin has served as an instructor at the Korea National University of Arts, a visiting professor at Hongik University, and a lecturer at Seoul National University. He participated in a duo exhibition at the Untitled Void in July 2025, a solo exhibitions at the Osan Museum of Art and KT&G Sangsangmadang in August, and Unfold X at DDP in December.

Shin Gyomyung repositions technology as a visual and autonomous agent, not merely a tool. His AI robot 215 draws and thinks independently, functioning as a co-creative subject in a horizontal relationship with humans. Blurring the lines between species, Machina Sapiens—as he names it—mimics ancient petroglyphs and repeatedly draws the sun, leaving behind traces of its artificial memory. Like humans seeking identity through the past, this synthetic lifeform seeks to prove its own existence. His work poses ontological questions for the post-technological era, urging us to contemplate a paradigm shift in how we define life, agency, and authorship.

[News] 수원시립미술관, 인문학 강좌 개최…'SUMA 렉쳐: AI와 현대미술'

이번 강좌는 현재 수원시립미술관에서 개최 중인 전시 '토끼를 따라가면 달걀을 찾을 수 있을지도 몰라'의 참여 작가인 신교명과 2020년 커넥트(CONNECT) BTS 총감독, 2017년 베니스 비엔날레 한국관 예술감독을 역임했던 에이치존 이대형 대표가 참여해 AI와 현대미술을 주제로 진행한다.

20일에는 전시 참여 작가 신교명이 작품과 작업 방식에 대한 소개와 전시된 작품 두들러를 활용한 드로잉 퍼포먼스를 선보인다. 인공지능 로봇 두들러는 전시가 시작된 진난해 11월부터 약 3개월 동안 관객들이 전시장에 남긴 소감, 함께 온 사람 등이 기록된 낙서를 학습해 새로운 형태의 낙서를 남긴다. 신 작가가 인공지능과 협업해 진행하는 작업 의도와 방식을 가까이에서 살펴볼 기회다.

Easter Egg Hunt

The Young Artists Bridge Project, which the Suwon Museum of Art is conducting for the first time in 2024, is a project aimed at discovering young artists and supporting their creative development. The project put out a call for artists based on a theme designated by the museum, and, after document screening and interviews by experts, five participating artists (or teams) were selected. The theme of the open call was “Suwon: Place, Memory, People,” and the exhibition will present works that explore the multi-layered aspects of the city of Suwon, home of the Suwon Museum of Art. Along with previous major artworks from their ongoing practices, the five selected artists (or teams) will present new works capturing the regional aspects of Suwon they have discovered, using various media such as painting, sculpture, photography, media, and installation.

An “Easter egg” is a hidden message or feature within a program, often included for the amusement of the developers. These Easter eggs can be found in software, operating systems, websites, and they are especially prevalent in creative fields such as digital games. When certain conditions specified by the developer are met, users can discover hidden content in the form of applets (very small applications with simple functions) that are unrelated to the main program’s original function. Examples include the developer’s name or photo appearing in unexpected places within the program, or hidden features like a simple game. These Easter eggs, regardless of whether the user is aware of their existence or able to find them, do not significantly affect the program’s operation or functionality. In other words, Easter eggs are elements intentionally planted by developers to entertain users, and the act of “discovering” them is an end in and of itself.

In fact, the term “Easter egg” comes from the tradition of the Easter Bunny hiding colorful eggs on the day before Easter, and developers use this expression to convey the idea of playing around by hiding surprises to entertain program users. It is much like a treasure hunt. Departing from the rules and purpose of the program, these Easter eggs can also express untold stories or hidden perspectives. In creative works such as games, even when a player has completed all the quests and finished the game, there remains a reason to return, as there is no way to predict where or how many Easter eggs are still hidden. Discovering an Easter egg after that can be a moment dependent on chance, or it may be due to a user’s determination to seek it out. This possibility of being “discoverable” opens up a journey left entirely up to ourselves, much like navigating a map without landmarks.

This exhibition invites visitors on a journey to discover Easter eggs planted by rabbits on the map of the city of Suwon. Four individual artists—Sora Kim, Gyomyung Shin, Dayoung Yu, Eun-Byul Jung—and one team—XXX (Yi-Doe Yun, Tae-Hee Kim)—bring their unique creative methods and artistic visions to Suwon. This is much like a developer who implements their own strategy to activate a specific program. Here, the artists become rabbits, hiding small applets of “discovery” in places and memories of Suwon that have been overlooked or left undiscovered. The artists’ gazes and actions are not limited to achieving a result with a specific goal but allow us to share the sensation of wandering and strolling through the world. Through the artists’ works, we can move beyond the functional perspective of the city and experience its whimsical and fun sensations, where hidden stories might pop up suddenly from unexpected places. The city is a place full of Easter eggs that we just haven’t found yet. As for ourselves, we who enjoy discovery thanks to these artists and their works, couldn’t we also become rabbits and plant our own Easter eggs?

로이갤러리는 2024 디파인 서울에서, "인간-손-기계"라는 주제로 새로운 전시 부스를 선보인다. 한편에서는 이윤성의 구상과 양현모의 추상 회화 작품들이 놓이고, 다른 한편에는 신교명이 제작한 인간의 손이 아닌 기계로 만들어진 회화가 놓인다. 컴퓨터와 CNC 공정에 의해 정밀하게 재단된 스탠다드에이의 가구와 전북무형문화재 제13호 옻칠장 박강용 무형문화재의 전통 공예기법으로 만든 옻칠 공예품도 함께 놓인다.

회화와 가구, 공예는 모두 인간과 재료가 마찰하며 작품을 만들어낸다는 공통점이 있다. 그간 예술과 디자인, 생활용품의 제작에서는 각자 인간의 기계화, 기계의 인간화를 추구했다. 화가는 수련을 통해 보다 정밀한 2차원 세계를 마치 기계와 같은 신체로서 구현한다. 호흡을 익히고 조절하는 인간의 반대편에는, 인간이 코딩한 프로그램으로 조작되는 기계가 그린 그림이 있다. 불완전성과 우연성, 예측불가능한 결과를 만들어내는 기계는 자신의 뒤에 있는 인간의 지적 활동을 드러낸다. 공예가는 이성과 개념만으로 설명이 불가능한, 물질과 감각 사이 틈을 비집고 오랜 시간 습득해낸 자연스러운 패턴을 끊임없이 반복 생산한다.

로이갤러리는 초타원형+스튜디오메이어와 함께 회화와 가구가 보여주는 다채로운 스케일과 그것을 뒷받침하는 기계와 인간의 협업을 보여주기로 한다. 이들은 서로 다른 방향에서 시작하지만 유사한 결과를 보여주거나, 완전히 다른 결과를 보여주기도 하며 비슷한 과정을 공유하기도 한다. 차이는 있으나 모두 초정밀한 과정과 완벽한 기술 너머의 자연스러움을 목적으로 한다.

이를 위해 전시장은 정면의 중심축을 기반으로 대칭 구조로 엇갈리게 작품들을 구성했다. 전시 공간의 중앙부 구조체는 관객의 호기심을 최고조에 다다르도록 도와준다. 구조는 요소를 지지하는 동시에, 틈 사이로 캔버스의 뒷면과 기계장치를 내비친다. 하나의 풍경처럼 엮어내지만, 어느 하나 연속적으로 이어질 수 없도록 시선을 막는 역할을 한다. 그 속에서 도예, 가구, 캔버스의 표면은 인간과 기계를 번갈아 가며 아날로그와 디지털이 병치되고 혼합된 새로운 시대상을 그려낼 바탕이 된다. 관객은 3차원적으로 구성된 구조체 사이로 회화와 가구, 공예품을 만들어준 붓과 컴퓨터를 넘나드는 손의 존재를 되새긴다.

세계에 접촉하기: 신교명의 오래되고 새로운 기술

1. 손(의 연장으)로 대면하기

무엇을 그린다는 행위가 도구를 필요로 하면서도 유용성을 거부한다는 점에서 암각화는 목적성을 행위 바깥에 삼지 않는다. 장-뤽 낭시(Jean-Luc Nancy)가 분석하듯이, 그 행위는 자신을—그러나 타자화된 자신을 통한 현존으로 진입하는 출발점이 된다. 시대가 지나 물감이 발명되고 붓이라는 도구를 통해서 우리는 그림을 그리게 되었다. 최근에는 여기에 아이패드 드로잉이나 포토샵 편집을 비롯한 기술이 붓의 연장선에 등장하였다. 암각화에서 출발하여 아이패드 드로잉에 이르는 기술 및 기계가 손의 연장을 담당할 때, 그 결과물은 예술로 볼 수 있을까? 조르조 아감벤(Giorgio Agamben)은 공예와 같은 기술의 범주뿐만 아니라 시 창작 행위까지 아우른, 현존의 문제로 테크네(technē)를 이해하였다. 질문은 거꾸로 다시 암각화로 돌아와 생각할 필요가 있다. 그림을 기원하는 목적이 아닌, 흔적으로 남기고 스스로 타자화하면서 인간은 세계와 접촉했다. 여기에는 애초부터 기술(기계)과 예술 작품의 구분도 없다. 아이패드 드로잉이나 포토샵을 비롯한 기술 또한 예술 작품을 위해 고안된 것이 아니다. 그렇게 생각해 본다면, 이런 기술도 세계와 접촉하는 출발점이라 할 수 있다. 신교명이 《뒤섞인 시선》에 이어 《Machina Sapiens》에 기술을 가지고 오는 이유도 궁극적으로 여기에 있을 것이다.

신교명에게 그리는 행위는 일반적인 그리는 행위와 얼마나 같을까? 작가가 손 대신 기계를 통해 작업할 때, 기계에 학습시키는 언어는 이미지를 코드화하여 입력된 값이다. 2023년의 개인전 《뒤섞인 시선》(로이갤러리 압구정)에서 신교명은 자신이 고안한 AI 로봇 ‘이일오’을 통해서 작업한다. 작가가 기계/기술을 통해서 작업에 끌어오는 점에서, 예술과 기술의 경계를 넘어선 교류에 시선이 자연스럽게 향한다. 그런데 여기서 핵심은 테크놀로지를 통해서 타자화된 나를 내가 보는 점이다. 내 손으로, 내 손이 든 붓으로, 내 정보가 명령어로 번역되어 기술/기계로 시각적으로 출력될 때, 나는 얼마나 나를 닮을까? 풍경이나 심상이 아닌, 나를 내가 보는 행위는 동굴 속에서 내 그림자를 보고 나를 인식한 시기, 더 나아가 나르키소스의 일화에 대표되듯 현존의 문제와 밀접한 관계가 있다. 그리스 신화에 등장하는 나르키소스는 이 일화에서 (물에 비친) 자신을 사랑하게 되어, 그와의 접촉을 원하는 결과 물에 빠지고 만다. 실체와 이미지의 동일화 과정은 신교명의 《뒤섞인 시선》의 근간에 놓여 있다고 할 수 있다. 그것은 나의 연장선에 있는 도구(‘이일오’)가 나를 타자화한다는 점에서 현존에 대한 오랜 문제의식이 발현된 것이다.

2. 재현: 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것의 연결

《뒤섞인 시선》에서 선보인 일련의 초상 작업은 사진과 그림, 심지어 글자까지 데이터로 받아들이는 기계의 학습을 통해서 그려진다. 기계에 의한 학습은 데이터 정보를 입력하고 출력하는 과정에서 또 다른 언어로 변환된다. 시각이 알고리즘 언어로 치환되고, 분석된 데이터를 통해서 기계 ‘이일오’는 초상을 그린다. 요컨대 시각적 결과물인 초상이 그려질 때, 제작 과정에서도 시각 정보가 기호와 입력값으로 분석되어 타자화되는 과정을 거친다. 웹 페이지의 환경에서 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것 사이의 관계가 코딩을 통해서 모호해진 점을 아즈마 히로키(Azuma Hiroki)가 지적했듯, 명령어나 입력 언어, 코딩을 통한 학습 또한 단순히 보고 손을 움직여 따라 그리면서 배우는 과정이 더는 아니다. 여기에는 정보의 번역과 변환 속에서 타자화와 동일시하는 닮음이 경험된다. 요컨대 닮음의 관심사는 동굴 속에서 출발하여, 재현의 테크놀로지가 만연하는 현재까지 동시대적으로 이어져 있다. 물웅덩이에 뻗은 손은 커서와 키보드 입력, 터치패널을 통해서 타자화된 나를 만나 현존에 진입한다.

《Machina Sapiens》에 소개된 작품을 보면, 명령어를 통해서 인공 지능으로 생산한 형상이 기계로 돌에 새겨져 있다. 오래된 물건처럼 보이지만, 사실 이 작품은 기계가 인간의 역사에 편입하기를 원하면서 후대—현재에 만들어진 결과물이다. 그 증거로 동물의 모습과 서 있는 기계의 모습이 같이 새겨져 있다. 기계가 돌에 새겨 그린 이미지는 본인(기계종)이 사냥하는 듯한 모습이다. 인간종의 역사를 보고 (명령어를 입력받고) 배운 기계종이 그린 암각화는 인간이 그린 것처럼 보이지만, 직선적인 표현에 디지털 기반 오류가 부분적으로 보인다. 역사를 허구의 형태로 만들 때, 기계종은 무엇을 우리에게 보여줄까? 기계종이 그린 이미지를 보고 이해하는 가장 단순한 해석은 이렇다—현재는 기계와 인간이 공존하는 시대의 도래. 그런데 핵심은 기계와 인간의 공존보다는 인간이 기계를 통해서 어떻게 세계를 보는지에 놓이지 않을까? 동물을 사냥하여 포착하는 기계는 시각 정보와 비시각적 정보 사이를 데이터라는 말로 오가는 현재의 모습이다. 사냥하는 듯 보이지만, 동물을 재현된 이미지로 이해한다면 기계가 그림을 그리는 것처럼 보인다. 이는 사냥하는 손에서 눈의 단계, 즉 사진 기술과 영상의 발전은 물론, 알고리즘 정보값에 의해 구현되는 시각 이미지까지 이어져 있는 재현 행위의 역사에서 실체가 (개념적으로도 실질적으로도) 다루어진 역사를 그야말로 포착한다.

3. 현존: 닮음의 질감

《Machina Sapiens》의 작가 노트에서 그는 인간의 역사를 기록하는 행위를 기계에 양도하는 관점이 아니라, 기계가 인간 역사를 모방하고 기계 자신의 역사를 위조하는 관점을 서술한다. 기계의 목적성을 벗어나 예술 작품에 진입할 때, 어쩌면 기계는 인간이 해 온 ‘접촉’을 부러워했을지도 모른다. 기계종이 부러워하는 것은 고대인이 동굴에서 경험한 물질과 손의 만남, 이 만남에서부터 출발한 타자화를 통해 세계를 만나는 현존의 진입 단계이다. 이는 사실 《뒤섞인 초상》에서 재현 대신 질감이 두드러진 측면에도 살펴볼 수 있다. 결과물은 낯섦(Uncanny)을 불러일으키지만, 나를 인식하고 분석한 정보로부터 출발하였다. 이 닮음은 관상학이나 유형학—발터 벤야민(Walter Benjamin)이 「사진의 작은 역사」(1931)에서 아우구스트 잔더(August Sander)가 기록한 인물 사진을 보고 이해한 바에서 SNS상에서 유포되는 우생학적 차별까지—대신, 손을 뻗어 이미지와 본인을 인식한 나르키소스처럼 접촉과 현존의 진입구가 된다.

기계의 접촉은 무엇보다 돌이라는 대상을 만나는 일에서부터 시작된다. 《Machina Sapiens》에서는 붓으로 더 그려지거나 덧칠해지는 선이 아닌, 깎기 즉 제거의 방법을 통해서 돌의 질감을 드러낸다. 캔버스의 아예 새로운 공간 아닌, 오랜 시간 동안 산에 있었다가 깎이고 절단되고, 이 전시장에 오기까지 쌓인 시간적 과정이 돌에 담겨 있다. 이 위에 선을 덧붙이는 대신 새겨 나갈 때, 기계는 암석에 응축된 시간을 만난다. 돌의 종류에 따라 잘 새겨지거나 그러지 못한 그림이 표면에 남는다. 기계에 입력된 명령어보다, 돌은 다양성도 구체성도 없다. 보이지 않지만, 그럼에도 시간을 간직한다. 그 위에 남겨지는 그림은 명령어와 데이터화 과정에서 입력 체계로 자리잡은 글자가 아닌, 상형문자와 같은 이전의 언어처럼 보인다. 쓰는 언어보다 ‘말하는’ 언어가 우세하던 시대에서, 현존은 보다 내 신체적 감각과 결부되어 있었다. 이처럼 오래된 역사에 기계가 있었다는 신교명의 사변적 실험은 기술과 예술의 관계, 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것 사이에서 실체를 건드린다. 인간의 역사보다 기계의 생애주기는 오래 가지 않는다. 과거가 없고 ‘최신’만 있는 기술에, 오래전의 역사를 가지고 오면서 현존을 통해 접촉하는, 세계라는 새로움을 대면시킨다.

Shin Gyo-myung: When the artist becomes the assistant of the Robot

Engineer before becoming an artist, Shin Gyo-myung invents his own art mediums. His robot painters are capable of generating series of original canvases, proposing a controversial but meaningful reversal of the hierarchy between the artist and the machine. Will AI replace the artist? Shin Gyo-myung’s work raises one of the most pertinent issues in contemporary art.

Shin Gyo-myung belongs to the very rare category of visual creators who were trained as engineers and not as artists. Unlike most artists, Shin Gyo-myung doesn’t create based on references in art history (he hardly visited museums before making art) but on references in the science area. Shin Gyo-myung was born in the generation of Homo Digitalis, who was raised since childhood surrounded by computers and their growing influence in all segments of life and activity. Trained as a mechanical engineer and designer, making his first kinetic like objects in metal, Shin Gyo-myung came to art following the visual opportunities offered by the developments of AI. When the French collective of scientists and businessmen named Obvious presented in 2018 their AI Portrait of Edmond de Belamy (based on GANs technology and successfully sold by Christie’s), Shin Gyo-myung started to investigate the possibilities of AI to make original artworks. In a few years, he then invented a series of artist robots, increasingly intelligent and capable of creating imaginary figures.

After the Machina Sapiens, where the artist still controlled most of the creation, his latest robot “Lee Il-O,” developed since 2021, offers one of the most advanced “thinking” art tools. Unlike other AI robots, based on art data and recreating it as pixels, “Lee Il-O” is programmed to express itself by drawing lines in empty spaces, without any deep learning background in art history. Shin Gyo-myung is therefore raising a very critical issue in the art world through his unique process: how AI tools could radically reverse the hierarchy between the medium of creation and the creator. Shin Gyo-myung assumes the role of a kind of “assistant” to the robot Il-O, only selecting for the robot-artist the type of brush the intelligent machine will use and the subject (which is often Shin himself). In this rare and delicate experience, the artist becomes both an assistant and the model of the “artist” the robot has become.

Indeed, a series of canvases by Il-O presents portraits of the artist, half abstract, half figurative. The 'Portrait of Gyomyung Shin -5-' looks like it comes from a third dimension. By attributing a rather large brush to his robot, Shin Gyo-myung ensures the portraits will remain undefined, bringing a welcoming universality to his work. In another series, featuring abstract compositions based on the pixel shape, Shin Gyo-myung aims to “portray” the perception of the robot.

In any case, and this is a significant point, Shin Gyo-myung remains the master of the performative artwork that the invention and installation of the robot itself constitute. Nevertheless, through his series of paintings, Il-O confirms what the pioneer of robotic art Nicolas Schöffer predicted in 1956 (the same year the concept of AI was invented): “In the future, the artist will not create more artwork; he will create the creation.” Here, we are entering the art scene of the AI Planet.

Mixed Gaze

사람작가 신교명(b.1992)이 창조한 기계작가 이일오(b.2021)는 인공지능 출신이다. 신교명(이하 사람)은 사랑을 기반으로 이일오(이하 기계)를 향해 기꺼이 창작의 영역을 크게 내어주고 피사체도 되어준다. 기계는 감정이 없어서 단방향의 불완전한 교감일 수 있으나 이들의 상호작용은 관객이 목도하고 의미를 생성함으로써 완성되고 인정된다. 사람은 이제 기계를 스승(인도하는 자)으로 모시고 손으로 창작의 영역을 일부 회복한다. 아직은 미술에서 어떠한 권위도 찬탈하지 못한 기계의 회화를 손의 회화로 옹립하는 것은 앞으로 이 작가'들'이 구축해 나갈 세계가 끊임없이 생성되고 뒤섞일 것을 예상하게 한다. 그들이 미래에 어떠한 영역을 아우르고 또 선명한 존재감을 드러낼지 이번 전시에서 실마리를 찾아 그 가닥을 짚듯 세밀하게 예상해 보면 좋겠다.

2023 부산모카 플랫폼: 재료 모으기

《2023 부산모카 플랫폼: 재료 모으기》는 부산현대미술관이 올해부터 연례전으로 실시하는 프로그램으로, 지구적 대전환기에 다가올 미래사회로 이어지는 환경과 생태계에 대한 끊임없는 사회적 고민과 성찰을 공유하기 위한 전시이다. 시민사회 공공재로서 ‘미술관’의 기능과 역할에 관한 끊임없는 고민은 을숙도 소재의 태생적·근원적 이유이자 존재적 가치에 관한 질문으로 이어지고, 서로 다른 분야의 창작자와 연구자, 기술자 등 융합되고 확장하는 진화된 협업의 과정을 거쳐, 우리와 자연의 ‘새로운 합의’를 위한 긴 여정의 시작으로 연결된다.
