Jongkie Lee

(b. 1956, South Korea)

Biography

Jongkie Lee (b. 1956, South Korea) uses subjects that are special to him as his subject matter and captures them in his work. He appreciates highly prized art, such as Kim Hwan-ki's work and moon jars, in his own unique way. Recalling the emotions of Kim Hwan-ki as he dotted his work and the potter as he molded a jar for everyday use, he returns to a pure sense, a state before value is assigned. In this microcosm, beloved characters like The Simpsons and Superman infiltrate the artist's work, layering fantasy upon fantasy. Jongkie Lee began his career after graduating from Dankook University's Department of Mechanical Engineering and completing a master's degree in painting from Hongik University. He has held about 40 solo exhibitions, including at Roy Gallery (2023) and Print Bakery Gallery (2022), and has been actively involved in not only domestic but also overseas stages such as the US, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, including at Seoul Auction Gangnam Center (2023, 2022, 2020), Lotte Gallery (2024), Kiaf (2022, 2021), Korea Gallery Art Festival (2023), Art Miami Aqua, Context (2024), and Seattle Art Fair (2024).
