Attempts to simply categorize the different streams of contemporary art under a formalistic rubric sourced in Western art history prove difficult. Efforts to neatly categorize the eclectic trends into definable branches such as Impressionism’s exploration of light, Expressionism’s intense introspection, or Cubism’s diversity of viewpoints are obsolete. Defining “contemporaneity” itself becomes an intricate task considering the gaps in modernization and maturation amongst different nations and cultures. These artists, then, utilize their own visual language to express their experiences. Their voices range from an effluence of energetic expressions of self, fragmentary images of surroundings, lingering footages that savor memories, to visual attempts of bridging past and present and thought-provoking questions that defy norms. These give artists ultimately differ in their sources but converge in their intensity of color and expression.
