Created by Gyomyung Shin (b. 1992), Lee Il-O (b. 2021) is an artist born out of artificial intelligence. Out of love, Shin, the human, willingly acquiesces creative jurisdiction to Lee, the machine. Acting as its subject, Shin interacts with the emotionless Lee in a seemingly restricted manner. However, the communion is completed through the audience who imbues meaning to the relationship. Man has now turned to machine as his teacher, and partially reclaims the creative process through his hands. The advocacy of hand painting over machine painting—which has yet to usurp any authority in art—anticipates a mercurial future full of shifts in the industry. Through Shin’s solo exhibition at ROY GALLERY, we can perhaps augur the possible strands of this new frontier.
